Two Wolves

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between two wolves" inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith." The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: "Which wolf wins?" The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

A Fistful of Dollars????

Or, "Taxpayers, Gimmee Your Money, ALL of it"!!!!"

Well, I see Congress did it to us again. In the name of "SAVING THE PLANET" and don't get me wrong, this is my home too, the House of Representatives passed the "Climate Change Bill" aka the "Cap and Trade Bill" aka the "Tax and Kill Bill." It passed 219 - 212 yesterday, June 26, 2009. I couldn't be more happy. Even though the Capital Switchboard was jammed and Congressmen were being inundated with emails, it still passed. Even though no one had an opportunity to read the thing, it passed. This will cost each American family an additional $2,000.00 annually. And we don't even know what is in the bill. I'm beginning to feel dizzy. Is it too much to ask that our legislators, once they draft a piece of legislation, stop and take time out from their "busy" schedules to sit down and R-E-A-D the damn thing? Apparently not. It's painfully apparent they don't represent me anymore but their own self interests. Because they leave me no choice let's see if we can fix this problem shall we? How about each state collect their share of federal income taxes and put the whole dang thing in an escrow account until the fed gets its act together. Hey you guys, this is MY money NOT yours! You still haven't gotten the message yet. This is not a free globalization ticket paid for at the expense of the American taxpayer and yet this is exactly who's gonna pay. And another thing I've been wondering about is how's the dairy farmer going to cover the butts of his cows after they've eaten a bale of hay and they keep belching? Does this bill provide butt covers (oh, and another thing..are these made in China or the US of A?) and will this bill provide the money for the dairy farmer so it won't come out of his own pocket? I dare say a big fat NO. And Mr. Gore, what about all that carbon dioxide you continue to spew about how the earth is heating up (my response - this is a natural phenonenom you moron) can we tax you? Boy I'd be worth gazillions. I'm sorry this is just so laughable if it weren't so ominous. We now have a Congress who clearly is representing one thing - themselves. Not you, not I. When they wantonly, willfully continue to ignore the will of the American people and choose to pass legislation that is clearly harmful not only to our fragile economic infrastructure but to American families, our fuel industries, farmers, ranchers, transportation, and everyone else (no one will escape the ramifications of this bill) and will DESTROY jobs, not CREATE them, then we're in for some very hard times. We have a Congress OUT OF CONTROL.

------------------------

soule: If Congress is so interested in "creating" jobs than why aren't we "drilling here, drilling now?" - if we want to stop buying oil from foreign governments than we need to do this while we're converting to cleaner energy; this creates lots of jobs, BTW; and why is it that Venezuela and China will be drilling off the coast of Cuba (just south of Florida) - the Cubans have struck a deal with them. It's the same oil field that we could be drilling in. Also, are they going to be "environmentally" sensitive to the area they are drilling in? Let's see a show of hands. And "environmentalists" aren't going to have any say in the matter as just look at Venezuela and China with environmental issues. Pollute Pollute Pollute. And does it make sense that we will be buying back (from them) the same oil that we could be drilling for ourselves? What about building nuclear power plants (again creating jobs) that is a source of clean safe energy? Look at France. We can't make any wise cracks here because France is way ahead of the USA on this one.

News "Worthy"

My cousin just emailed me regarding a fourth Navajo Code Talker (WWII) that has died within five weeks. My cousin was angry that the news media is focusing their attention solely on Michael Jackson's death. I agree with him. We all feel sadness at Mr. Jackson's passing and offer condolences to his family. But my cousin raises a good point. Why aren't we talking about this WWII soldier who was instrumental in breaking the Japanese secret code? And what about any suffering he endured? Apparently this man's life isn't important news to report, at least nationally. Oh, I get it. My parents generation, this man's generation, the one that saved our behinds and Europe's doesn't matter anymore. Is this because there is such a huge disconnect between what happened 60 years ago (WWII) and today? Because we are shown on television and the news the video "Thriller" but no one has a clue about American history? And then we have Farrah Fawcett who put up a valiant fight in her battle with cancer. My heart goes out to her family also. No one will ever ever know what this woman went through. How much she suffered. I can't go on. But what about this WWII veteran? Who has remembered him? FOX, CNN? MSNBC? ABC? CBS? Where are you? Can we at least consider for one moment what I am suggesting? I'm all for remembering folks. It's what we do. It's part of our grieving process. But let's not let the rest of our unsung "heroes" be forgotten. They deserve their moment in the news as much as the showiest Hollywood stars do. Maybe even more. And in the end, I believe that their star(s) will shine the brightest.

Liberty vs. Tyranny

Please visit http://www.youtube.com/ and view the video: "Open Letter to the World - English Version by Iranian Artists in Exile." An impassioned plea from one who personally knows and is witnessing what it's like to just fight for the opportunity to raise some questions, to voice one's opposition to how his country's Presidential election was run and won. It gives one pause, as an American, to ponder the rights that we have under the Constitution. These Iranians are fighting for the very rights we take for granted here. I hope the Obama administration acknowledges the sacrifices and risks being taken by these Iranians and supports them in their quest toward uncovering any wrongdoing that took place during the election of their President. We need to speak out--we're either on the side of Liberty or Tyranny. Mr. President which side are you on?

WE ARE A FREE PEOPLE

From Soule: Even though this was written in April, the opinions expressed at that time have only been confirmed by the current events unfolding in Washington, D.C.
-------------------------------------------
April 3, 2009
To the President of the United States:
We are a “Free People.”
You have committed treachery.
What you are doing, knowingly, to this country, to her infrastructure, to her foundation, is beyond words.
I never in my life dreamed that my own government would turn on its people.
The inexcusable way in which you are draining us of everything, invading our way of lives, excoriating the private sector and then having the gall to tell all of us, “this is for the good of the country” and continue your all out assault on our constitutional freedoms is something to behold.
How dare you? How dare you? How DARE you?
You were elected to the Office of President, the highest office of this land and you have trashed it. You and ACORN, Geithner and Dodd and Schumer and Frank and Clinton and all the rest of your ilk.
You, sir, and the Congress that is now under the heel of your boot, is a cancer that is not slowly invading our lives but on a death march.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, love of country, freedom, liberty, the right to worship, family, self-sacrifice, courage, self-reliance, honor, duty.
You, sir and I’m talking to you, Congress, as well, are so far from these fundamental truths you are “ad nauseam.”
Yet, you continue your defiant “Death March” toward our complete oblivion in favor of “Global Governance.”
Well, sir, I will have none of it.
You, President Obama, have thrown down the gauntlet.
You have no idea what you have unleashed in the human spirit, that passionate love and respect for country, that strong connection with just WHO WE ARE, WHAT WE STAND FOR as a nation and as individuals.
You are a despicable piece of work. A liar, a thief, an enemy of the people.
But I will say one thing, on your behalf, you have stirred up a “hornets nest.” And if I know anything about hornets, they have a powerful stinger on the end of their behinds.

Putting Our Soldiers At Risk - Not a Problem for Congress

Fox News reports that Congress now wants to give away $107B to the IMF (International Monetary Fund) oh, I don't know, just another loan I guess. But included within this "loan" is the releasing of photos of prisoner torture. We've been through this one before haven't we? The President has said that he would block this kind of information being released, as he has stated that it would put our troops in danger. But has he? NO. And a Democratic Congress, in its continued, deceptive, underhanded way of playing "Politricks" has included this in this latest "bailout" bill for the IMF. For what reason, I ask meekly? The President could put a stop to this here and now. Just have the photos CLASSIFIED. Get it??? Classify them so they can't be released. Simple. If this legislation is passed it will affect our troops very gravely. We've already heard what affect this will have on troop morale not to mention their safety, from many different sources, groups. Unbelieveable. Congress is willingly going to allow this harmful legislation to pass in favor of an international organization, the IMF, dismissing the safety of our troops? There are just no answers that make sense anymore. The LATE GREAT U.S.A.? Everything is happening at a breakneck speed. Hey, what's the rush? Is there a fire sale I'm missin? Answer: "Yeah - mine." I wonder how fast the Democrats would be pushing this legislation affecting our soldiers lives if their asses were on the front line? Come to think about it, that's where all of them should be--on the front lines. Ready to face the enemy they so embrace. And our soldiers standing right behind them, so they can't turn and run. Okay troops ready? Check your ammo. Ready Sargeant? Yes, sir - Carry on! Hoo Rah!

'Be Safe' Out There.......

Because of recent abductions: In daylight hours, refresh yourself of these things to do in an emergency situation... This is for you, and for you to share with your wife, your children, everyone you know! After reading these 9 crucial tips, forward them to someone you care about. It never hurts to be careful in this crazy world we live in. 1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do : The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do! 2.. Learned this from a tourist guide. If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you... Chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION! 3.. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy.. The driver won't see you, but everybody else will. This has saved lives. 4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their chequebook, or making a list, etc. DON'T DO THIS! The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR , LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE..
If someone is in the car with a gun to your head DO NOT DRIVE OFF, Repeat: DO NOT DRIVE OFF! Instead gun the engine and speed into anything, wrecking the car. Your Air Bag will save you. If the person is in the back seat they will get the worst of it . As soon as the car crashes bail out and run. It is better than having them find your body in a remote location. 5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage: A.) Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor , and in the back seat B.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars. C.) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and the passenger side... If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.) 6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot. This is especially true at NIGHT!) 7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; and even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN, Preferably in a zig -zag pattern! 8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP! It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked 'for help' into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim. 9. Another Safety Point: Someone just told me that her friend heard a crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police because it was late and she thought it was weird.. The police told her 'Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door..' The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run over. The policeman said, 'We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door.' He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby. He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that they hear baby's cries outside their doors when they're home alone at night. 10. Water scam! If you wake up in the middleof the night to hear all your taps outside running or what you think is aburst pipe, DO NOT GO OUT TO INVESTIGATE! These people turn on all youroutside taps full ball so that you will go out to investigate andthen attack.
Stay alert, keep safe, and look out for your neighbors! Please pass this on This e-mail should probably be taken seriously because the Crying Baby Theory was mentioned on America 's Most Wanted when they profiled the serial killer in Louisiana
I'd like you to forward this to all the women you know. It may save a life. A candle is not dimmed by lighting another candle.. I was going to send this to the 'ladies' only, but guys, if you love your mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, etc., you may want to pass it onto them, as well.
Send this to any woman you know that may need to be reminded that the world we live in has a lot of 'crazies' in it and it's better to be safe than sorry.. Everyone should take 5 minutes to read this. It may save your life or a loved one's life.

Matthew 7:15 "Beware of False Prophets"

America's First Muslim President
Center for Security Policy Jun 08, 2009 By Frank Gaffney, Jr.
During his White House years, William Jefferson Clinton - someone Sonya Sotomayor might call a "white male" - was dubbed by an admirer in the African-American community "America's first black president." Applying the standard of identity politics and pandering to a special interest that earned Mr. Clinton that distinction, Barack Hussein Obama would have to be considered America's first Muslim president.
This is not to say, necessarily, that Mr. Obama actually is a Muslim, any more than Mr. Clinton actually is black. After five months in office and most especially after his just-concluded visit to Saudi Arabia and Egypt, however, a stunning conclusion seems increasingly plausible: The man now happy to have his Islamic-rooted middle name prominently featured has engaged in the most consequential bait-and-switch since Hitler duped Chamberlain over Czechoslovakia at Munich.
What little we know about Mr. Obama's youth certainly suggests that he not only had a Kenyan father who was Muslim, but that he spent his early, formative years as one in Indonesia. As the President likes to say "much has been made" - in this case by him and his campaign handlers - of the fact that he became a Christian as an adult in Chicago, under the now-notorious Pastor Jeremiah Wright.
With Mr. Obama's unbelievably-ballyhooed address in Cairo last Thursday to what he calls "the Muslim world" (hereafter known as "The Speech"), there is mounting evidence that the President not only identifies with Muslims, but may actually still be one himself. Consider the following indicators:
Mr. Obama referred four times in his speech to "the Holy Koran." Non-Muslims - even pandering ones -- generally don't use that Islamic formulation.
Mr. Obama established his first-hand knowledge of Islam (albeit without mentioning his reported upbringing in the faith) with the statement, "I have known Islam on three continents before coming to the region where it was first revealed." Again, "revealed" is a depiction Muslims use to reflect their conviction that the Koran is the word of God, as dictated to Mohammed.
Then, the President made a statement no believing Christian - certainly not one versed, as he professes to be, in the ways of Islam - would ever make. In the context of what he euphemistically called the "situation between Israelis, Palestinians and Arabs," Mr. Obama said he looked forward to the day "...when Jerusalem is a secure and lasting home for Jews and Christians and Muslims, and a place for all of the children of Abraham to mingle peacefully together as in the story of Isra, when Moses, Jesus, and Mohammed (peace be upon them) joined in prayer."
Now, the term "peace be upon them" is invoked by Muslims as a way of blessing deceased holy men. According to Islam, that is what all three were - dead prophets. Of course for Christians, Jesus is the living and immortal Son of God.
In the final analysis, it may be beside the point whether President Obama actually is a Muslim. In The Speech and elsewhere, he has aligned himself with adherents to what authoritative Islam calls Shariah - notably, the dangerous global movement known as the Muslim Brotherhood - to a degree that makes Bill Clinton's fabled affinity for blacks pale by comparison.
For example, President Obama has - from literally his inaugural address onwards - inflated the numbers and, in that way and others, exaggerated the contemporary and historical importance of Muslim-Americans in the United States. In The Speech, he used the Brotherhood's estimates of "nearly seven million Muslims" in this country, at least twice the estimates from other, more reputable sources. (Who knows? By the time Mr. Obama's friends among the radical "community organizers" of ACORN perpetrate their trademark books-cooking as deputy 2010 census-takers, the official count may well claim there are considerably more than 7 million Muslims living here.)
Even more troubling were the commitments the President made in Cairo to promote Islam in America. For instance, he declared: "I consider it part of my responsibility as President of the United States to fight against negative stereotypes of Islam wherever they appear." He vowed to ensure that women can cover their heads, including, presumably, when having their photographs taken for passports, driver's licenses or other identification purposes. And he pledged to enable Muslims to engage in zakat, their faith's requirement for tithing, even though four of the eight types of charity called for by Shariah can be associated with terrorism. Not surprisingly, a number of Islamic "charities" in this country have been convicted of providing material support for terrorism.
Particularly worrying is the re-alignment Barack Hussein Obama has announced in U.S. policy towards Israel. While he pays lip-service to the "unbreakable" bond between America and the Jewish State, the President has unmistakably signaled that he intends to compel the Israelis to make territorial and other strategic concessions to Palestinians to achieve the hallowed "two-state solution." In doing so, he utterly ignores the inconvenient fact that both the Brotherhood's Hamas and Abu Mazen's Fatah remain determined to achieve a one-state solution, whereby the Jews will be "driven into the sea."
If possible, the Palestinians and other enemies of Israel will try to accomplish this end-state through yet another violent onslaught against Israel - an option Mr. Obama's policies may cause Israel's enemies to think is once again viable. Alternatively, the Palestinians and their friends can realistically anticipate it will inevitably result from a rigged "peace process," one that would more accurately be described as a destruction-of-Israel "piece-by-piece process."
Whether Barack Obama actually is a Muslim or simply plays one in the presidency may, in the end, be irrelevant. What is alarming is that, in aligning himself and his policies with those of Shariah-adherents like the Muslim Brotherhood, the President will greatly intensify the already-enormous pressure on peaceful, tolerant American Muslims to submit to such forces - and heighten expectations, here and abroad, that the rest of us will do so as well.

The Tragedy of the Yemeni Jews

The tragedy of the Yemeni Jews
The government has stood by and let jihadist gangs drive Jews out of Yemen. Now their community is on the brink of extinction

Lyn Julius
guardian.co.uk, Sunday 7 June 2009 10.00 BST
The last Jews of Yemen are leaving. They are packing their bags and moving to Israel or the US. A community dating back to Biblical times is on the brink of extinction.
Sixty years ago one million Jews lived in Arab countries, but violence and state-sanctioned discrimination scapegoating them as Zionist spies have forced out all but 4,000 – who remain mainly in Yemen, Morocco and Tunisia.
Most Jews were airlifted from Yemen to Israel in the 1950s. The 400 left have resisted moving to Israel, having come under the influence of the non-Zionist Satmar sect. Some returned after a taste of life in the US or Israel (the government generally turns a blind eye to Jews travelling to the Jewish state). Now things have got so bad that even these die-hards are departing.
The murder in December of Moshe al-Nahari, a 30-year-old teacher based in Reda, north of the Yemeni capital, sparked this latest crisis. At first, the authorities claimed that the murderer was "mentally imbalanced". But it became clear that he was religiously motivated, screaming "convert or die, Jew!" as he pumped five bullets into his victim.
For some time jihadist gangs have been harassing Jews in Yemen. Girls have been abducted and forced to marry local tribesmen. Two years ago, 45 Jews, driven out of their village of al-Salem in north Yemen by threats from Shia Houthis, were relocated to the capital Sana'a.
Yemen is hardly an oasis of tranquility: it has more guns than people. The Jews are not the only ones to suffer in its long history of lawlessness and instability. Lately, however, Jews have had it especially tough.
Jews, tribal sheikhs, rights activists and lawyers all concur that harassment has reached an all-time high. After al-Nahari's murder, the Jews were besieged in their own homes and petrol bombs lobbed at them. Moshe's brother, rabbi Yahia Ya'ish, appealed to the government: "protect or deport us". Those wishing to leave could not claim their passports because the government's computers had mysteriously broken down.
Yemen's president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, pledged to take the Jews under his wing in Sana'a, where, in contrast to the countryside, he has firm control. Some say the government is well-meaning but ineffective; others that the promised relocation was never serious. The Jews were to be re-housed in two blocks, too cramped for their large families and vulnerable to attack. But they could not even sell their homes in Reda after local imams intimidated would-be buyers.
The Al-Nahari murder verdict in March was the last straw. During the trial the murderer's family threatened the victim's relatives. Instead of the prescribed death sentence, the judge ordered the murderer to pay "blood money". The Jews felt less secure than ever: the Jewish Agency and the US government swung into action to plan the Jews' rescue and resettlement.
Mahmud Taha, a journalist who has been following the story, is not surprised that the Jews want to go. "There is no option for the Yemeni Jews but to migrate. The local authorities have failed to protect them ... The Jews are fed up and have reached an intolerable situation," he said.
Mansour Hayel, a Muslim human rights activist and Yemeni Jewry expert, blames the government: "In Yemen there is hardly a mosque sermon that's free of bigotry. The government's own political rhetoric marginalises the Jews, and civil society is too weak to protect them," he says.
Perhaps because they understand that tolerance towards minorities is the key to strengthening Yemen civil society, Yemeni human rights activists
have been vigorously defending Jewish rights. They want the media to start promoting democracy and tolerance; and equal civil rights for Jews, who pay discriminatory taxes and, as dhimmis, suffer various handicaps under sharia law. But Jews whose lives are in danger are unlikely to stick around long enough to see such reforms implemented.
The lesson one draws from the final exodus of the Jews of Yemen is that the Arab world does not even tolerate non-Zionist Jews. There can be no future for the pitiful remnant in Arab lands if their safety cannot be guaranteed.
In Morocco, where the Jewish community is largest, Jews traditionally repaid the king's sympathy with tremendous loyalty. But the king of Morocco was unable or unwilling to prevent 260,000 Jews leaving in the face of rising antisemitism in the 1960s, media incitement and forced conversions.
Even benevolent rulers have been powerless to stem the rising tide of anti-Jewish hatred engulfing the Arab world. Few Arabs are now likely to meet a Jew in their lifetime, and the gullible believe the demonisation and conspiracy theories peddled by their media.
No wonder Jews have spurned official invitations for them to return to live in their countries of birth. Jews visit as tourists, but few see their future in these countries. In Tunisia and Morocco al-Qaida targeted Jews in 2002 and 2003. In April the murder of a Jew in Casablanca sent the community into a panic. In May, eight terrorists were arrested for planning attacks on Jewish sites.
If Morocco and Tunisia fail to keep a lid on jihadist terrorism and incitement, their last Jews, too, will soon be following the beleaguered Jews of Yemen into exile.

Interesting Facts

Professor Joseph Olson of Hemline University School of Law, St. Paul , Minnesota , points out some interesting facts concerning the 2008 Presidential election:
Number of States won by: Democrats: 19 Republicans: 29 Square miles of land won by: Democrats: 580,000 Republicans: 2,427,000 Population of counties won by: Democrats: 127 million Republicans: 143 million Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by: Democrats: 13.2 Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by: Republicans: 2.1
Professor Olson adds: "In aggregate, the map of the territory Republicans won was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of the country. Democrat territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in government-owned tenements and living off various forms of government welfare..." Olson believes the United States is now somewhere between the "complacency and apathy" phase of Professor Tyler's definition of democracy, with some forty percent of the nation's population already having reached the "governmental dependency" phase.
If Congress grants amnesty and citizenship to twenty million criminal invaders called illegals and they vote, then we can say goodbye to the USA in fewer than five years. If you are in favor of this, then by all means, delete this message.
If you are not, then pass this along to help everyone realize just how much is at stake, knowing that apathy is the greatest danger to our freedom!

D-Day, June 6, 1944 - Could the "D" Possibly Stand for "Decision?"

WA man, 85, remembers parachuting on D-Day
By JIM CAMDENTHE SPOKESMAN-REVIEW
SPOKANE, Wash. -- Two things Ray Batten remembers about D-Day: It was postponed a day, and when he finally did get to France, he spent his initial time up in a tree.
"I remember the anticipation, the waiting, waiting, waiting," said Batten, a Spokane resident who was a member of the 101st Airborne that parachuted into France 65 years ago, in the early-morning hours of June 6, 1944.
The paratroopers, who had been confined to their marshalling area in England for weeks, geared up to leave on June 5, but the weather was so bad the Allied invasion of Europe was put off for a day.
Twenty-four hours later, packing the explosives he needed to blow up German communications stations and rail lines, Batten headed for the transport plane. "I had so much weight on me I couldn't get into the plane by myself," said Batten, now 85.
Getting out of the plane wasn't as difficult. When the signal light went on, the paratroopers stood up, hooked to the "static line" and moved to the open hatch. The light changed, and they stepped out into a black night punctuated by anti-aircraft artillery flashes.
"It was like jumping into the middle of a big fireworks show," Batten said.
He floated down, but didn't hit the ground. Instead, his parachute caught in a tall tree, and he hung there. For how long, he's not even sure.
"There was fireworks going all around on the ground, and here I am swaying back and forth in a tree," he said. Even a round that only grazed him could set off the explosives. "My only hope, I thought, was to play dead."
Batten, a Virginia native, left school in early 1942 and enlisted in the Army at 18. He volunteered for parachute school, and later trained as a forward artillery spotter. Until a few months before D-Day, he was an instructor in the United States, but as the Allies began concentrating forces for the invasion, he was sent to England to join the 101st Airborne, which was to be dropped into France hours before the amphibious landings on the Normandy beaches.
The night before the invasion, the paratrooper units were given their missions and their "drop zones," or landing targets.
"You never land in your drop zone that's the bite," he said.
But Batten had an even bigger problem. He didn't even land on the ground. He played dead for what "seemed like ages," until the ground below him got quiet, then he unhooked his parachute harness and lowered himself down a rope.
He reached the end and still couldn't see the ground.
"I remember saying a short prayer, and dropping." Not so far, as it turned out, and there was no one around.
Batten linked up with other paratroopers, many of whom had similar experiences, and they began to make their way between the fields, and around the areas the Germans had flooded to trap invading forces.
The soldiers were so far from their intended targets that their commanders had to gather up whomever they could find and improvise. Batten doesn't think he blew up any of his intended targets, but he and the paratroopers he was with made their way to Ste. Mere-Eglise, the city inland from the coast that was the gathering point for the 101st. They suffered heavy losses in fighting through Normandy until mid-July, when they were sent back to England for rest and training for another mission.
Batten parachuted into Holland later that September in a joint mission with the British known as Operation Market Garden. He was at the Battle of the Bulge that December, where he was wounded and suffered frostbite in his feet from so many days in the snow. He was sent to a hospital in Paris for three months, and was supposed to be sent home.
"I ran away from the hospital, to go back to my outfit," he said. "I wasn't through with the war yet."
When the war ended in May, they were in Berchtesgaden, Adolf Hitler's mountain retreat, searching for Nazi leaders. He drank some of Hermann Goering's stash of wine when the unit captured the air marshal's private railroad car.
"Looking back, I've often thought I hide the things I don't like to remember. I had buddies die in my arms," he said. "But the things I remember and like to preserve are the fun things."
When the war ended, Batten was shipped back to the United States.
He tried to re-enlist when the Korean War started, but the Army turned him down. He worked for Standard Oil, helped build the Yellowstone Pipeline and became a consulting engineer and a contractor, building defense projects and service stations. Of all the places he worked throughout the West, he liked Spokane best and settled into a house he built on the South Hill, where he's lived for more than half a century.
When he watches Hollywood depictions of D-Day and the battles in Europe, he adds his own personal commentary to the television set. Some are very true to life, such as "Band of Brothers," a book made into an HBO series about the 101st Airborne's 506th Regiment, a unit he spent some time with. But some of the depictions are "a bunch of crap" and he'd like to write his own book to straighten things out.
The biggest misconception he thinks exists about soldiers on D-Day: "That we even knew what we were doing."

From: soule>I was born a year before WWII ended. My Dad, Americal Division, knew up close and personal what war was all about. As he and his buddies slogged their way through the jungles of New Caledonia, Guadelcanal, he contracted malaria, lost most of his teeth and witnessed much that he did not wish to share, but only after he had "come to grips" with it. He spoke to my husband of watching haplessly as incoming mortar rounds took out his buddy behind him and his buddy in front of him. They were "blown to smithereens." He was left, unscathed. You can imagine what he was covered in. His comment to my husband, "gives one a new perspective on life." This is called duty, this is called courage, this is called self-sacrifice so that others could be set free. This is history. This war was about fighting a barbaric, ruthless, evil, unrelenting enemy-Adolph Hitler. It took years and much sacrifice but evil was finally overcome. How much of this "history" is being taught in our public schools today? What about the history of the Korean War? How did it start and why are we still there? Better yet, what about the American Revolution and how it all led up to the founding of this country, the United States of America? In just twenty years the rest of the WWII generation, the descendants of those war heroes who left wives, sons and daughters behind, to go to war to liberate a people who underwent unspeakable horror will also be "just a memory." Who or what will be this country's standardbearer? Where will this country be at that time? Will the U.S. be completely taken over by the "globalists?" Will we forget about our Judeo-Christian heritage in favor of Islam? Or, will we still be a sovereign nation, with liberty and freedom for all? It all depends on you and I, right here, right now. We have some decisions to make (2010 comes to mind) and they cannot be made with our own self-interests in mind. We have families, and this country has a legacy of making hard choices when it comes to defending freedom and liberty, not only here but abroad. It is going to depend greatly on who we elect to office whether it be local, county, state or federal. If we do not like the direction this country is going then for the sake of the Almighty and the Founders, and those who paid the ultimate price, so I can sit here at my keyboard and pour my heart out to you, then let's keep in mind their sacrifices. Thank you, Dad, for your stellar service to your country and to all the rest of our military "heroes."

"Maxine" Says....

Minorities?
We need to show more sympathy for these people. * They travel miles in the heat. * They risk their lives crossing a border. * They don't get paid enough wages. * They do jobs that others won't do or are afraid to do. * They live in crowded conditions among a people who speak a different language. * They rarely see their families, and they face adversity all day ~ every day.
I'm not talking about illegal Mexicans ~ I'm talking about our troops! Doesn't it seem strange that many Democrats and Republicans are willing to lavish all kinds of social benefits on illegals, but don't support our troops, and are even threatening to defund them?
